WHAT IF?

Exploring ridiculous questions with serious science.

THIS WEEK’S QUESTION ASTROPHYSICS · 6 MIN READ.

What if Earth were as dense as a neutron star?

Earth would become impossibly small, but the consequences reach far beyond that. Explore how extreme density affects gravity, spacetime, and life on our planet.

WHO WE ARE

The What If Club is a student-led community centered around turning curiosity into investigation. We take hypothetical scenarios that sound impossible, combine ideas from different subjects to explore them, and use real evidence to build the best answer we can.

“Breakthrough innovation occurs when we bring down boundaries and encourage disciplines to learn from each other.”

-Gyan Nagpal

Ask

The process starts with our members submitting their very own strange, seemingly impossible, or just straight up weird questions.

Investigate

We use a wide variety of subjects to explore whatever the question demands, whether that be physics, mathematics, biology, philosophy, etc.

Discuss

We meet to challenge each others’ assumptions and compare our explanations. We hope this convergence of ideas will make bigger and better questions.

RECENTLY EXPLORED

BIOLOGY

WHAT IF HUMANS COULD PHOTOSYNTHESIZE?

Could you sit on your windowsill and skip breakfast? Biochemistry isn’t the problem, but the surface area of humans may be a challenge.

BIOLOGY

WHAT IF HUMANS’ HANDS AND FEET SWTICHED?

Would this just be a minor inconvenience, or would the world end?

PLANETARY SCIENCE

WHAT IF WE HARNESSED THE POWER OF EVERY LIGHTNING STRIKE

They say catching lightning in a bottle is supposed to be near impossible, but what if it was possible? Is it a viable energy source?

COMING SOON: MEETING FIVE— Questions Meeting

Will be held on October 22 and will feature new questions as well as make up questions from meeting four. Stay tuned!

1.) GO BEYOND THE CLASSROOM - We explore questions classes don’t have time to answer

2.) CONNECT DISCIPLINES - We connect ideas across different subjects

3.) BUILD RESEARCH SKILLS - We practice researching and explaining complex topics

4.) FIND YOUR PEOPLE - You’ll meet other relentlessly curious students

5.) SHAPE THE CLUB - You’ll help choose future investigations

6.) SHARE AN IDEA - You’ll present a question of your own, if you want to

About the founder-

Built from one question…

The What If Club was founded in 2026 by Simon Frye after a classroom discussion about neutron stars produced the question “What if Earth were that dense?” After noticing that there was nowhere at school for questions like this to be seriously explored, he created one.
